West Side Story

August 29th, 2008

Based on Conception of Jerome Robbins
Book by Arthur Laurents
Music by Leonard Bernstein
Lyrics by Stephen Sondheim

Marking its 50th anniversary in 2007, West Side Story is the classic American musical of two rival youth gangs in New York City (Jets and Sharks) whose battle for turf and superiority provides the backdrop to an exploration of youth gangs, police relationships, prejudice and the romance of two young people caught in a violent cross-cultural struggle. The plot and main characters of West Side Story are loosely based on Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. The story has been modernized and Americanized with the introduction of a racial theme - Tony, a member of an established white gang (the Jets) falls in love with Maria, whose brother is a member of the rival Puerto Rican gang (the Sharks). The Jets are contemptuous of the Sharks and look down on them as foreign newcomers. The Sharks wish to establish themselves as Americans and defend their new territory. As in Romeo and Juliet, the rivalry escalates and leads to great tragedy.  The electrifying music of Leonard Bernstein and the prophetic lyrics of Stephen Sondheim hauntingly paint a picture as relevant today as it was fifty years ago.

Even people who have never seen the stage show or the Academy-award winning 1961 movie musical will remember many of the songs:

Tonight, I Feel Pretty, Maria, One Hand One Heart, Somewhere.

Is the Los Angeles Unified School District going in the right direction or is it business as usual. Tell your story. I bet I could write a book about the rights and wrongs.

LAUSD ON WRONG TRACK WITH ONE-PATH SYSTEM.

The Los Angeles Unified School district its priorities set wrong. This Los Angeles Daily News piece just confirms that opinion.

Acknowledging the growing force of globalization, the Los Angeles Unified School District is gearing up an ambitious program to offer Mandarin Chinese language and culture courses at all of its middle and high schools. The plan, which will go to the board next month, calls for the courses to be offered at about 200 middle and high schools, and each of the LAUSD’s eight local districts also would have at least one dual-immersion program in which students started studying the language in kindergarten. The move would be one of the largest of its kind in the nation and would put Los Angeles Unified on the cutting edge of language and culture instruction in public schools.Superintendent David Brewer III touted the plan at a Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce luncheon last week. He called it “embarrassing” in his years as an admiral that the U.S. Navy is the only one in the world whose sailors speak just one language.

“It’s arrogance. Every student in China is taking English classes,” he said.

LAUSD has been working for the past 18 months with Mandarin in the Schools - a local panel created by a prominent national nonpartisan Chinese-American organization called the Committee of 100 - on how to expand the classes in Los Angeles schools.

It has been a long-standing policy of the LAUSD to allow the use of public school facilities after hours only to non-profit organizations.

That’s why the Sunland-Tujanga community got so aroused when it found out Mt. Gleason school was being turned over to Home Depot for a community meeting June 24 to win support for its effort to convert a closed K-Mart into one of their stores”

    Muscle cars

    July 27th, 2008

Although opinions vary, it is generally accepted that classic muscle cars were produced in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Muscle cars were built for street use and in some cases racing.

    Bullitt

The car was a 390 GT Mustang, dark green, and is logged as one of the best car chases on the silver screen ever. This car had muscle to spare! This was definitely back in the day, and you were the “man” or “woman” if you were driving anything that even remotely resembled it.

The 1969 Chevelle SS Malibu is first on the list. The Chevelle has a classic Muscle car appearance, and a variety of different power plants.

A true classic is the Dodge Charger. This baby really joined the ranks of the muscle car after the inclusion of the 426 Hemi engine in 1966. Proof of this car’s following is the eventual re-awakening of the Charger name.

The all time king of cars some might say is the Chevy Corvette. To attempt to pick the overall best year/engine combination would be impossible to do. Not only an incredible roadster, but always full of muscle. It is the solution to many a man’s mid-life crisis.

“She’s real fine, my 409.” How could I leave out the car that inspired this Beach Boys tune. In 1961, Chevrolet introduced the Impala SS 409.

For lovers of Ford, the greatest in their line up must be the Mustang. With the varied different engines and builds such as the Boss, Shelby, Mach 1, and Cobra, any one can see why so many people are smitten with this one. Another example of an older classic that has recently had its name revisited.

The first-generation Chevrolet Camaro appeared on 26 September 1966 for the 1967 model year on an all brand new rear-wheel drive GM F-body platform and would be available as a 2-doors, 2+2 seating, coupé or convertible with a choice of six-cylinder and V8 powerplants. The first-gen Camaro would last up through the 1969 model year.

Enthusiasm for the Camaro comes easy. It invades the luxury kingdom of Cougar by offering more comfort options and the sporty area of the Mustang by having at least the same amount (if not more) of enthusiast-oriented accessories.

A Camaro exclusive is the 350-cubic-inch V-8 that comes as part of the SS-350 option. This engine is supplied with a four-barrel carb and is modestly rated at 295 horsepower. Torque is listed at 380 pound-feet at 3200 rpm.

Musclecar Comparison: 440 Barracuda vs. 396 Camaro vs. 428 Mustang

The Ford Mustang and Chevrolet Camaro are two of the greatest cars to come out of the States.

The Ford Mustang was launched on April 17 1964 at the New York World’s Fair and via a national television advertising campaign. The original model was a compact car, weighing around 1,200kgs and available in hardtop and convertible styles with a straight-six or V8 under its hood.

The Chevrolet Camaro was GM’s much needed answer to the upstart from Ford.

It arrived almost three years after the Mustang in 1967 and set out to beat it on road and track. “Because it arrived after the Ford and GM had longer to develop it, some people say it was superior to the Mustang.
